Like the adamant, bold, and strong waves along the beach of Siargao, the Budjong Integrated Humanitarian Mission never stops as they successfully carry out Medical Mission: Cataract Surgery and Cervical Screening at the Family Life Center, General Luna, Siargao Island, Surigao Del Norte, from January 26–29, 2023.
The medical team screened 350 cataract surgery patients. 84 of which underwent surgery and were performed by none other than, Dra. Maria Theresa Villaluz Heyrosa and Dr. Vic Cajita, who have been committed to this cause ever since. From the logistics of medical equipment and supplies, the cost of surgery itself, which usually ranges from Php25,000 to Php50,000 or more depending on the severity of the case, and the thorough planning of the medical mission, it’s hard to believe that it was rendered for free. This wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for the genuine desire of these doctors to restore the lost sight of these unfortunate individuals.
On the other hand, Dr. Gemma Sobrevega not only examined 102 patients for cervical cancer but also spoke to the Rural Health Unit of General Luna, Siargao, about cervical cancer and all that it entails.
They will learn how to carry out the procedure, what they can do for their neighborhood, and how to raise awareness of the disease.
Other medical services that were rendered included minor and major surgery for goiter, gall bladder stones, thyroid gland tumors, ovarian cysts, myomas, hydrocoele, almoranas, bungi, cysts, and lumps, which were conducted by a group of volunteer doctors from Cebu Doctor University Hospital and the Cebu Medical Society, Inc.
The MJB Cares Foundation donated hygiene kits for 300 patients while Mabuhay Deseret donated the eye drops and the Eye Hear Foundation donated eyeglasses.
This Medical Mission is an initiative and sponsored by Cong Bingo Matugas and Mayor Sol Forcadilla Matugas, who brought forth different organizations to render free medical services: Budjong Integrated Humanitarian Missions, Integrated Bar of the Philippines, Mabuhay Deseret Foundation, Cebu Doctors University Hospital, Eye Hear Foundation, MJB Cares Foundation, Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery, Cebu Medical Society, Inc., CDUH Surgery Surigao Doctors, RHU- General Luna and IBP-Cebu.
The doctors, medical team, and volunteers move like ocean waves: continuously, consistently, and cresting. We will remain dedicated to the cause.
